Our Plan

Education for Change is tightly focused on opening K-5 elementary schools in the City of Oakland that will share one educational design, and one support infrastructure, across all EFC schools. A shared infrastructure based on one educational model will help us achieve our most important organizational objectives:

  1. Prove that a system of urban public schools can succeed with all students at high levels
  2. Build a sustainable and financially sound system of public schools
  3. Create lasting change in urban public education across the country

Our Growth Plan and Financial Need

Phase I

EFC has two main goals during phase I of our development as an organization:

  • Provide the foundation and structure for high levels of student achievement at all 3 of our school sites.

  • Create a financially self-sustaining infrastructure for core operations.

We are currently well into Phase I of our plan. We have had tremendous financial support led by NewSchools Venture Fund and we will continue to collaborate with the philanthropic community to share best practices and potentially to fund innovative ideas to enhance and accelerate our students’ academic achievement. Beginning the 07/08 school year Education for Change will be operating without major philanthropic support for core operations at the site level and at Home Office.

In the area of student achievement, our benchmark assessment results are reaching new highs as we progress in our ability to effectively address the academic needs of each and every one of our students. We look forward to seeing the reflection of this growth on our standardized test results.

Phase II

Phase II of our development will focus on serving more students in struggling communities. An important part of our plan is to be a significant part of society’s efforts to offer high quality educational opportunities for students in underserved communities. Through our work in sharing and supporting effective practices in urban education and through direct service to students, we will focus on expanding our impact on the community.
