East Bay Agency for Children (EBAC) has provided expanded learning services for Oakland students for over 25 years. EBAC’s afterschool programs offer academic and enrichment classes that cultivate student learning.
Through a child-centered approach, EBAC’s teachers help children discover their individual strengths, build healthy peer and adult relationships, and develop skills to regulate emotion, cope with everyday challenges, and counter the impacts of trauma. EBAC after-school programs create a safe environment for students to experience and develop new skills. Busy parents/caregivers benefit from their children’s increased school attendance, engagement, and confidence in knowing their children thrive after school. Our programs promote equity, inclusion, and values and embrace students’ diversity. EBAC afterschool programs serve the whole child, connecting students and their families to internal and external wellness, educational, and safety net services to address individual challenges and meet basic needs.

Oakland Leaf provides quality, culturally responsive, and free out-of-school-time programming focused on social and emotional learning, creative expression, and academic support and includes a diverse range of enrichment opportunities.
Oakland Leaf supports youth in building their social and emotional skills with mindfulness and resiliency practices, team-building exercises, creative expression and movement activities, and restorative justice circles. We invest in the leadership development of young people by facilitating strength-finding activities, skill-building workshops, and Rites of Passage retreats focused on social awareness and community impact. Our 5th and 8th-grade students also participate in transition readiness activities.

Girls Inc. of Alameda County

As with all of the program activities, Girls Inc. provides ongoing literacy activities with infused strategies to support the development of students’ SEL skills, opportunities to strengthen peer and adult relationships, take positive risks, build self-awareness, and self-management.
- Girls Inc.'s after-school programs provide literacy intervention one hour daily for elementary students and two times per week for middle school students. For elementary, the goal is to increase student’s reading levels by at least one year as measured by SRI, iReady, or other school-day assessments. For middle school, the goal is to support students in navigating complex text, to increase confidence to persist academically, and to increase their skills to navigate academic systems.
Students will engage with Common Core-aligned, culturally responsive, and data-informed literacy activities to provide targeted support that meets their individual literacy and social-emotional needs. Students become more engaged, confident, and capable readers and writers by participating in activities such as read-aloud, literacy centers, Reader’s Theater, academic discussions, and guided reading. Our component lessons have English Language Learner supports that can be modified depending on group needs. Students are developing comprehension and analysis skills across the grades. Students engage in academic discussions using sentence starters (academic talk stems). Our internal assessment (DIBELS) informs student grouping for instruction differentiation for Kinder - 5th grade. For students in 4th - 8th grade, the book club model allows for additional support for struggling readers such as scaffolded content and opportunities for instructor-led close readings.
