GalileoX

Contact: Nicole Bowler, Director of Galileo X,

Program Attributes: Education for Change Public Schools and Galileo X partners for  six weeks of summer camp plus one week of spring break camp across the Education for Change sites with each camper's day built around three age-tailored rotations, and a full-day option that adds a morning academic block (Fishtank ELA, Amira for TK-2 or iReady for 3-8, and math). Students are grouped into four bands: Nebulas (TK-1), Stars (2-3), Supernovas (4-5), and Meteors (6-8).. The three rotations are Innovator's Studio, where students sustain focus on an individual polished take-home STEAM project such as a jetpack, vacuum, rocket, or pinball machine, with complexity and duration scaling up by age; Idea Lab, a collaborative, paired design-challenge space that prioritizes experimentation and iteration over finished product and closes each day with a memorable maker finale like large-scale decor installations, friendly competitions, or "epic destruction"; and Outdoor Adventure, which uses active games, team-building challenges, and daily choice time to build fitness, friendships, and the Innovator's Mindset kinesthetically.

Summer Programming: Potentially

At Life I Love School, we source, train, and place Certified Wellness Coaches who support the emotional development of Black and Brown girls.

We equip college students and young adults to become healing-centered mentors through culturally responsive training. Once certified, coaches are placed in schools and community spaces to lead our Wellness Program, helping girls manage stress, build confidence, and strengthen their voice.

Our model is simple but powerful: train the right people, place them in the right spaces, and watch girls thrive.

First Tee Oakland

Contact: Rebecca Martinez, Program Director, info@firstteeoakland.org

Program Attributes: First Tee — Oakland is a youth development organization that pairs golf with a life-skills curriculum, structured across two delivery tracks: a School Program embedded into elementary and middle school PE classes (First Tee provides the training, equipment, and lesson plans; the curriculum aligns to SHAPE national physical education standards and is adjustable for class size, time, and facility type, with the chapter working alongside schools to identify sponsor or donor funding), and a Community Program delivered at youth-serving organizations, plus access to national opportunities like scholarships and leadership events. Age bands run in four tiers — 7–9 (be active and have fun safely, build inner strength and self-confidence, learn to play golf, build relationships while exploring the game), 10–11 (explore character concepts collaboratively, develop golf skills and enthusiasm, reinforce Game Changing behaviors), 12–13 (deepen both golf skills and character commitments, demonstrate mastery and growth, support early-adolescent development), and 14+ (build character and personal development, advance golf skills, plan their own future paths, and evaluate, reflect on, and transfer life and golf skills to new situations). Content at every age band centers on the 5 Key Commitments — Pursuing Goals, Growing Through Challenge, Collaborating with Others, Building Positive Self-Identity, and Using Good Judgement — taught alongside progressively harder golf fundamentals and technique, with explicit skill targets including understanding and managing emotions, resolving conflicts, setting step-by-step goals, planning for the future, and appreciating diversity.

Oakland REACH Parent Initiative

Contact: Lakisha Young, lakisha@oaklandreach.org

Program Attributes: The REACH Parent District connects Education for Change families directly with free, high-impact virtual tutoring that runs anytime, anywhere — no site, schedule, or rotation structure required. Families enroll through an online form, receive Amira Learning login details, and complete a short initial Amira reading assessment so tutoring can start at the child's actual level; each family is then paired with a Family Success Coach who provides ongoing support, tracks progress toward tutoring goals, and keeps the family on pace. The program serves K–8 students in both English and Spanish, delivered through Amira, an animated AI literacy tutor. Content is literacy-focused — personalized decoding, fluency, and reading practice driven by assessment data. Participation requires a computer or iPad with WiFi and a family commitment of 30+ minutes of tutoring per week, the consistency threshold tied to measurable reading growth.

Oakland Athletics League

Contact: Lamont Robinson Jr., lamont.robinson@ousd.org

Program Attributes: The Oakland Athletic League Middle School Sports program is a school-based interscholastic league — not a club or independent program — serving students enrolled in OUSD schools and approved OAL charter/member partner schools, with students registering through their own school's athletic program and, per league policy, also registering with their site's Expanded Learning Provider (OAL runs in partnership with the Expanded Learning Program at each school). The structure is three competitive seasons: Fall (co-ed flag football, co-ed cross country, girls volleyball, competitive cheerleading, futsal), Winter (boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer), and Spring (track & field, boys volleyball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, futsal, wrestling, ultimate frisbee, and an OUSD middle school erg competition), with varsity and JV levels where noted. Age bands run grades 6–8 — fifth graders are ineligible, as are students who reach 15 years of age or ninth grade before the current school year. Content is competitive league play with schedules, scores, standings, and championships, wrapped in an eligibility framework that ties athletics to academics and behavior. The league also offers wraparound supports including mental health and well-being resources and the S.W.A.G. (Students With Academic Goals) Sports Academy.
